Ledama opposes Mbadi’s proposal to charge Kenyans for using public roads

Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina has opposed Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi’s proposal to impose toll charges on major public roads.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Ledama criticized the plan, arguing that the government should focus on building new roads if it intends to introduce toll fees.
"Build new roads and toll them, if you attempt to charge the existing roads we will resist,” he said.
CS Mbadi had earlier justified his stance, arguing that citizens should pay for the services they receive.
He further elaborated that the tolling system should be designed based on road usage, ensuring fairness in payment.
Mbadi had said that he supports tolling of roads because Kenyans should pay for services but was quick to add that there is need to structure the charges so that those who use the roads more pay more, while those who use them less pay less.
The CS also stressed the importance of offering motorists alternative routes noting that many Kenyans prioritize convenience and suggested that toll roads should provide faster travel options.
